Great motion typography videoclip from Cuarteto de Nos

Via Smashing Magazine I find this motion typography videoclip from Uruguaian band Cuarteto de Nos. They make use of this technique for their latest song’s video Ya No Sé Que Hacer Conmigo.

Spanish is a bonus as if you happen to understand it you’ll be able to hear/see how the words match the type and the motion graphics.

This video is no doubt a commercial application (rendition?) of some previous motion typography clips such as Pulp Fiction’s What Does Marcellus Wallas Looks Like? or Abbot & Costello’s Who’s On First. For more of the kind search YouTube by Motion Typography.

LastTube: Last.fm meets YouTube

If you are a Web 2.0 freak, own a Last.fm account and spend countless time digging in YouTube, LastTube is the right web service for you

The best of both worlds comes in the shape of a Mashup called LastTube that uses Last.fm’s and YouTube’s APIs.

Lasttube

It’s a web service that reads your preferences from your Last.fm account and “scrobbles” YouTube for related videos. I have to say that it got my preferences quite right. It even found a Bestie Boys live act on Letterman’s Tonight show.

The good: great concept. Serving audiovisual contents according to our musical preferences.
The bad: Firefox freezes while trying to load some videos.
The ugly: the Flash interface. Still, I can live with this at this stage of the project.

Here’s the developer’s blog.

And here’s some of his notes (pay attention to the development time):

Motivation: Create a “useful” client mashup using Flex 2 and public Web Services and RSS feeds in only one day without write any custom server side code.
Total development time: One day (Includes coding, testing, googling and lunch time)
Number of Developers: Just Me.
Server Side Code Created: None
Data Feeds, Web Services and Web Sites Involved: Last.fm, YouTube, Yahoo Pipes, Google Analytics.
Programming Languages and Tools Used: Actionscript 3, MXML, Javascript, Flex Compiler.
Known Issues: Sometimes Firefox “freezes” after video playing. Flash Video that doesn’t have complete metadata can “crash” the app.
Lessons Learned: Datatipfield doesn’t work “perfectly” with xml datasources. Handling Flash Video Metadata is a little bit “tricky”. ExternalInterface Rocks!

Btw, check the funny URL for the project.

Enjoy!

We don’t know the OS that God uses, but the Vatican uses Linux and its webmaster Mac OS

I’ve been meaning to post this magnificent interview with sister Judith Zoeblein before. Sister Zoeblein is the the mind and soul behind Vatican’s website Vatican.va, pumping bits and bites since the year of the Lord of 1995.

She’s interviewed in the renowned videocast The Scoble Show and it’s worth every word of it.

Some highlights of the interview:

Interviewer: My mind is racing on all number of stereotypes and you’re breaking all of them

Sister Zoblein: The mystery of man is the mystery of its creator, so the internet is an expression of this mystery. Underneath it there, there’s an expression of the creator and it’s part of our creative process.

Sister Zoblein: The idea is to use the energy of the internet to bring together a group and create a local community and then bring that community back into the actual world.

Sister Zoblein: What it used to work 50 years ago (to create community) doesn’t work anymore and community is being created on the net.

Interviewer: Do you think we’re gonna be attending church in Second Life?
Sister Zoblein: You mean after we die?

Interviewer: What does the Vatican website look like from the code perspective?
Sister Zoblein: Well it’s all Linux based and Apache.

Sister Zoblein: Those of us who work there have shifted over to Macintosh. Steve Jobs that’ll cost you.

Here’s the interview.

We are all monkeys

If you’re aware of your existence and know your place in creation you probably already knew that you’re a monkey. If you’re not aware of your existence then you’re a monkey.

In any case do as I did and watch this video.

Frank Zappa plays the bicycle on Steve Allen’s TV show

A link from digg took me to YouTube where all kind of wonders can happen.

I found a two part video of a young orchestra composer named Frank Zappa in a TV show from the 60s demonstrating how to play the bicycle.

It is actually a true Zappa-style performance but it is also a lesson on usability, interface and affordances (relationships between actors and objects).

The actual performance starts at the end of Part 1 but Steve Allen’s interview to a shy Zappa before it, is also worth watching.

things to do on a treadmill with OK GO

US band OK GO have a special way of shooting videoclips.

OK GO’s funny dance style even gave way to a dance contest held on YouTube. Don’t miss their latest video where they perform on treadmills.

By the way, the music is excellent.

remix your zidane

One out of six people in the world saw yesterday’s World Cup final in Berlin where Italy defeated France.

And exactly the same people saw Zidane headbutting Materassi.

Some on-line side effects:

  • 9 out of the top 20 most viewed videos in YouTube.com are Zidane’s headbutt
  • There’s already an arcade game where you can be Zidane and headbutt a bunch of Materassis
