Ganyet http://www.ganyet.com/the-real-world/the-best-band-in-the-world-is-from-barcelona La Banda Municipal del Polo Norte has recorded a demo CD with 5 tracks and a nice sleeve design which features a bear. Its title “Iros Despidiendo de Todo” which would roughly translate for “Say Goodbye To Everything”, reminds me of Dougas Adams’ So Long And Thanks For The Fish form the Hitch Hicker’s Guide To The Galaxy saga. I’m still working out the connexions between the two.

And by the way, any band that features me in their acknowledgements if of course the best band in the world.

McDonald's sponsored report jacket
In December 2007, McDonald’s had agreed to sponsor the report-card jackets for the county’s elementary schools (27.000 children) to cover the printing expenses of $1,600.

In exchange the report jackets would carry coupons redeemable in any McDonald’s restaurant, so any student with all A’s and B’s, two or fewer absences, or good behavior in a given academic quarter would be given a free happy meal.

Is this a sort of equal-fat-rights for the more gifted students? As we all know (and so does McDonald’s) there’s a correlation between education level and fast food consumption, so when they grow up, the A students wont be eating as many Bic Macs as the F students. “We’d better get them while they’re still don’t have an education”, must have thought Ronald McDonald.

After more than 2.000 complaints from enraged parents, McDonald’s decided to cancel the campaign. An end to the story that will no doubt make Naomi Klein and Morgan Spurlock happy.

You’d be wrong in this case.

Wu Tan Clan’s RZA and GZA will be fighting for glory, not with their rhyming weapon of choice and on a dancefloor this time but with chess on a 8 by 8 checker board.

A natural step as RZA himself says:

Hip hop and chess have a lot in common. Chess is a game of strategy, a battle and hip hop is a battle.

The goal of the Hip Hop Chess Federation (HHCF) is to find a way to use hip hop as an educational tool. For the creators it was too natural that the next element in the hip hop culture after djing, mcing, breackdancing and grafitti painting was chess.

We’re still alive…
The 5th edition of Xinacittà is back with all its wit and machinery at the end of June with three magnificent programs. The title is The Art of Getting By: migrations, utopias and inventions. Also, starting this year, we’re packing our bags and going on tour to show our festival all over the world. We’re not leaving Barcelona, but we are moving to a new square: bigger, with more room to lie down and roll around with the joy of seeing our films.

Take note, because if you miss it you won’t survive.
