• He will announce that those who take his apple-flavored serum will be invited into Promise City, and the rest will remain at the Gates.

They’re all funny but somehow they make you think.

What we’re trying to do with the Semantic Web is build a digital Aristotle.

This time I’ve gone for a much simpler design sticking to one column layout ditching the side navigation bar.

Another new concept on the blog is the aggregation of some of the many platforms where I publish contents: twitter, del.icio.us and the public part of my Google news reader.

Whether it’s a post written specifically for the blog, a bookmark on del.icio.us, a tweet or a shared article in Google reader, they all are treated equal: the latest one becomes the latest post and takes the place at the top of the page (even a small tweet). Sources outside Wordpress are syndicated automagically using the Feed Wordpress plugin (not perfect though as it produces more often than not duplicate entries).

A lot of time has been invested in Information Architecture and graphic design. At a latter stage I also integrated some of the jQuery framework capabilities. I’m afrait that I just scratched the surface but it’s clear to me that jQuery is really powerful and well architectured framework. In future projects I’ll keep it in mind as early as design time as it can really influence the interface and thus the Information Architecture.

As we all know we don’t live in a perfect world. If we did we’d all be using Firefox (or any W3C compliant web browser). The last days have been invested wasted in tweaking and hacking the CSS for Internet Explorer 6 and trying to work some magic out of the hideous browser. All credit goes to Rudewoikz.

All in all a very happy new start for an ordinary blogger.

Final note: Please make life easier by using Firefox!

This is the result of checking the availability of my website to the ever growing population of China. The Great Firewall of China is a website that keeps track of the many websites censored by the Chinese government and will tell you if yours is banned or not over there.

Mine is available from China but I’m not sure if this is good or bad.

In the page there is: a simple Helvetica Rounded logo, a philosophical quote about imperfection, a link to a social event in Barcelona and an email for confirmations.

Apparently this is about a gathering to discuss about Web 2.0 in Barcelona where there will be demos, talks, Ruby on Rails and new website announcements.

If you are a geek, marketer, blogger, artist, investor, entrepreneur or all the above, then come meet other people just like you. anyone who is serious about web 2.0 in barcelona should try to attend or send someone. respond early by email if you are confirmed, there is room for up to about 40 people at the current location.

The meeting will include demos of breaking new web sites using ruby on rails and ideas for you on developing commercial social web 2.0 apps. voice your opinion on what the next generation of social networks should be doing.

My guess is that these fivenin guys are trying to build some kind of social network and they want to get some first hand input from the Web 2.0 community in Barcelona.

Digging a little bit deeper the only facts we have are:

• The title tag of the fivein.es website: fivenin.es spanish english worldwide network. are you fivenin.es?
• The content meta tag in the header: spanish, english, social network, photography, espana, barcelona, madrid, buenos aires, mexico, mexico city, latino, latin america, social networking
• From the event description: voice your opinion on what the next generation of social networks should be doing.

I’ll attend the gathering today at 22h and post how the gathering was (if I don’t blog for a while start worrying).

First step: Setup
The set up is a breeze: point Ecto to your blog, enter userid and password and you can already start desktop blogging.

Second step: Tag support
This meant pushing ecto a little bit further. I couldn’t blog without the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin. Would ecto support tagging? I googled for ecto+wordpress and I came across Robin Lu’s hack to make it work. It involved hacking the xmlrpc.php Wordpress file. Lu’s instructions were clear eough so here I am.

Third step: Image upload
Rudeworks a much acclaimed blogger and expert CSS designer, expressed some concern with Ecto’s image handling. I’ll post a few pictures to check the results.

Wordpress vs Expression Engine

First and foremost I use Wordpress instead of Expression Engine as a CMS. Expression Engine is great for blogging but the power of open source, the huge community behind Wordpress and the ease of use allowing for hackability and plugin development of WP made the decision easy.

Spam

Spam bots and comment abusers where of great help too. I didn’t realize that my blog was so popular (if I’m to judge by amount of spam I was getting lately) but truth is that I couldn’t cope with that much junk. Let’s hope that the combination of WP and Akismet spam filter plugin beat the spammers this time.

Semantic markup and SEO

Semantic markup, SEO and simple CSS were also an issue. I was looking for a blog design that was optimized for search engines (SEO), easy to manage and where graphic design didn’t take precedence over contents. Derek Punsalan did a great job and all the design credit goes to him. It’s a great template that leaves room to content customization and semantic (more…)

If you thought the only Mexican exports to Barcelona were FC Barcelona’s Rafael Márquez, the Coronita beer and the Mexican hats sold in la Rambla you are wrong. Enrique Vallejo a writer and chef from Querétaro, Mexico, has established himself in Barcelona and has started blogging about the new world (old world?) that now surrounds him.

I’d keep an eye on Enrique’s blog. He may one day solve the mystery of the Mexican hats from la Rambla.
